I’ve become bored with the available camp lighting options on the market, as they all seem to be the same old in a different box. Thus, when I came across the Luminoodle COLOR Plus on KickStarter, it only took a few minutes of reading about it before I was rushing to lock in my pledge. If you like being outside, how could you not get excited about a portable, flexible, waterproof, multi-color light in the form of a rope – that can be hung, dangled or even stuffed into a sack to make a lantern?!
The Luminoodle COLOR Plus is a 5 foot color changing LED light rope and lantern powered by a lithium 3400 battery pack. The difference between the Luminoodle COLOR and the Luminoodle COLOR Plus is that the latter comes with a battery pack. I opted for the Plus because it was only $10.00 more.
All functions are controlled with a wireless remote or through the built-in controls. Depending on your mood, you can choose between 14 different light colors, including 3 different white modes (warm white, pure white, daylight) and a red night-vision mode. There is also a dimmer, allowing you to control the brightness of the light depending on your needs.
The Luminoodle COLOR allows you to choose between 4 different lighting modes: one color lighting, one color strobe, multi-color strobe, multi-color fade. In each lighting mode you can control the speed at which the light strobes or fades between colors.
The Luminoodle COLOR’s versatility comes from its ability to be hung basically anywhere. Attached are three magnetic sliders, which allow it to easily attach to metallic surfaces, such as your car. It also comes with four adjustable quick straps that permit you to hang the Lominoodle COLOR where ever you’d like.
The Lominoodle COLOR can be used as a lantern by simply stuffing it into the storage sack. When in the storage sack it gives off a pleasant diffused white light. This feature is nice when you do not feel like hanging it up, or don’t have anything near you to hang it to.
I love this thing! I took it with me on an overnight hike, and I really liked the fun vibe it gave our campsite. When turned up all the way on white, it gave plenty of light for us to see what we were doing. Once we finished eating and getting comfortable, I tried the multi-color fade mode while we played cards and listened to music. It livened up the mood and was a welcome addition to our post-meal ritual.
My only small critique would be with the wireless remote. It is a little confusing to use and difficult to see when in the dark. It would be helpful if the buttons lit up when pressed to give the ability to see which buttons you are trying to press. Nevertheless, this is not a big deal, yet would be nice tweak if Power Practical makes a third version.
If you’re going ultralight and counting ounces in your pack, then the Luminoodle COLOR most likely won’t make the list.
Otherwise, I definitely recommend this as a solid camp lighting kit. With all the different variations, the Luminoodle COLOR Plus will bring a fun, unique – and most importantly – a functional lighting experience where ever you are!
