Unboxing the All-New DJI Spark

A few years ago I purchased my first drone, the DJI Phantom 3, Standard addition. After some “getting used to” I was flying that thing all over town taking videos and pics from incredible vantage points. I was incredibly impressed with how far consumer drone technology had gone.

Fast forward 2 years, and drones are getting even crazier. Lately, I have been really itching to upgrade to one of the better camera drones on the market, but I wasn’t 100% sure which one to go with. Fortunately, we have been given the opportunity to unbox the all-new DJI Spark courtesy of the guys over at GOcase. They sent us their brand new DJI Spark custom case, along with a brand spanking new DJI Spark for us to unbox, and repackage it inside the GOcase. Check out the video above!

About the Spark:

The DJI Spark is a seriously innovative drone. The size of the drone is unreal, I would say it’s ⅕ the size of my DJI Phantom 3. It feels solid, not plasticy like other drones. It’s a lot heavier than you’d imagine for its size, but it only ads to the durable feeling. The color is sharp, we were sent a red version and it looks awesome.

It comes with quite a few parts in the Fly More Combo package. The Fly More Combo’s only difference between the regular version is that it comes with a remote controller for the drone. Apparently you can buy the DJI Spark without a remote control (it can be controlled using your smart phone or hand gestures if you don’t have a remote controller).

Fly More Combo Includes:

  • DJI Spark
  • DJI Spark Remote Controller
  • 2 Batteries
  • Power Supply
  • Power Cable
  • Micro USB Cable
  • 4 Extra Propellers
  • 3 Battery Charging Deck
  • Propeller Guards
  • Instruction Manuals

Overall, the DJI Spark is an awesome beginner drone, and definitely great for someone who is looking for an ultra-portable drone that is easy to fly. The camera quality is top notch, although it is maxed out at 1080p, so no 4K videos. The hand gestures take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll really enjoy moving the Spark around with just your palm. Battery life is pretty decent, around 20 minutes, so you’ll have plenty of time in the air to get some great shots.

GoCase custom hard case for the DJI Spark

The GOcase layers a soft fabric with a hard shell underneath.

I quickly realized that the DJI Spark Fly More Combo pack came with a good amount of stuff. One of the things most notable about the Spark is that it’s crazy small, and thus ultra portable. But you can’t just throw it in your backpack. You could risk breaking off a propeller, or messing up the camera, or a simply a hard impact from dropping your bag. DJI provides a bag with the combo pack, but the bag doesn’t actually fit the drone, it only holds the remote control and the accessories. The DJI Spark comes it a hard shell, but does not include any carrying handle. Basically, you are stuck with two pieces, 1 bag and 1 drone hard shell.

The solution: GOcase’s custom case for the DJI Spark Fly More combo kit

Custom cutouts provide a snug fit for both the Spark and its accessories.

The one thing you don’t want to do is buy a $600 drone and carry it around in a crappy case. GOcase definitely meets my expectations for what a drone case should be like. Their custom Spark case is solid. The exterior has a soft durable fabric, but the case itself is a hard case.

The interior is lined with memory foam and microsuede. The custom cutouts are made for everything that comes with the drone. Even the power supply has it’s own cutout to keep the cords protected. With a battery inside the DJI Spark, the case can fit another 2 batteries, allowing you to have 3 batteries during transport.

Easily fit your DJI Spark along with all your accessories.

The zippers on the side are FAST. I love how quickly you can open and close the case, without having to worry about the zippers getting stuck on a piece of fabric.

A shoulder strap comes included with the GOcase.

Everything fits inside perfectly. The drone fits snugly in its cutout, and is heavily padded on both the sides and bottom of the drone. The drone is far more protected in the GOcase than in the original styrofoam case that comes standard with the Spark.

Overall, I am quite impressed with the GOcase. If you’re looking to protect your DJI Spark, I would definitely recommend GOcase’s custom case. Not only does it do the job, but it looks the part as well. Showing off my new DJI Spark just got even better.
